Sarah Dessen was born in Illinois in 1970, however she grew up in Chapel Hill, NC. She had always been a big reader and when she was 8, her parents got her a manual typewriter to write stories on. In high school, she had a large group of friends who, she says, have inspired many characters in her books. Her senior quote, "The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say," was from a Pink Floyd song and ended up actually being her future. She attended UNC, where she graduated with a degree in English. 3 years after graduating, her first book, That Summer, was published. A year later, she left her job waitressing at the Flying Burrito to take up her first teaching job. She is the author of nine books. Her ninth, Along For The Ride, comes out on June 16th.
On writing Just Listen, she says, "People are always interested to learn where a story comes from, and I’m often asked where I get the ideas for my books. The truth is, sometimes I don’t even know: rather than just one big moment, it’s often a lot of little random thoughts, scribbled notes on scraps of paper and backs of receipts, that make up a novel. Other times, though, you can trace a story’s beginning back to a specific moment. That's what happened with Just Listen."
She lives in Chapel Hill with her husband, daughter and two dogs.
